Join SEI and Global Exchange on a renewable energy delegation to Cuba. Cuba's high priority on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and energy education have led the World Wildlife Fund to declare Cuba the only country in the world to achieve sustainable development due to their high development level and low ecological footprint. In this Renewable Energy and Energy Education Tour of Cuba we will meet with energy representatives from NGO's, the government, and educational institutions. We'll visit renewable energy sites, and see first hand how Cuba has become a model of sustainable energy development.

Hawaii Takes Bold Renewable Energy Initiative

Hawaiian governor Linda Lingle announced in October a comprehensive agreement to decisively move the state away from its dependence on fossil fuels for electricity and ground transportation. The historic accord is an achievement stemming from months of discussions and work on the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative. The effort, which began in January between the state and U.S. Department of Energy, seeks to move Hawaii toward having 70 percent of its energy use come from clean energy sources by 2030.

"With this agreement, Hawaii moves to the forefront in energy leadership in the nation," said Kevin Kolevar, assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy, whose office helped negotiate the agreement. "Hawaii's vision will prove to be a boon to the local economy and will lead to more stability and long-term reductions in the cost of energy in Hawaii. It will provide future generations with significant independence from imported fuel."

Obama Energy Transition
Obama's Energy Transition
President-elect Barack Obama has been busy naming the senior staffers to the Obama-Biden Transition Project. Former Clinton Interior Deputy Secretary David Hayes will be in charge of transition planning for all of the key energy and environmental agencies, including U.S. EPA and the Interior, Energy and Agriculture departments. Other members of the energy and environment transition include Jason Grumet, who headed the Obama campaign’s environmental and energy policy committee and serves as president of the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington. John Leshy, former solicitor general at Interior, Donald J. Barry, former assistant secretary of fish, wildlife and parks at Interior; David Sandalow, former assistant secretary of state for oceans, environment and science; and Frank Loy, former undersecretary of state for global affairs, will also be working on Obama’s transition team for energy and environmental agencies.

The Obama Administration is also planning on creating a Clean Energy Corps modeled after AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps.
