Learn Renewables in Beautiful Costa Rica!
If you are interested in learning about renewable energy for the developing world don't miss this great opportunity to take workshops in beautiful Costa Rica. Learn to design and install photovoltaic systems for the developing world at Rancho Mastatal, an environmental learning center and retreat located in the last virgin rainforest of Costa Rica's Puriscal County. Or learn about different renewable energy applications for the developing world including PV, methane biodigestors, solar ovens, and micro-hydro at Fundacion Durika, a private reservation of approximately 18500 acres located in the heights of Cordillera de Talamanca.

Spanish PV Manual - Now Available!
SEI Spanish PV manual
SEI's world reknowned book, Photovoltaics: Design & Installation Manual, is now available in Spanish. This updated and revised textbook manual on how to design, install and maintain a PV system offers an overview of photovoltaic electricity, and a detailed description of PV system components, including PV modules, batteries, controllers and inverters. Electrical loads are also addressed, including lighting systems, refrigeration, water pumping, tools and appliances.

The manual includes chapters on sizing photovoltaic systems, analyzing sites and installing PV systems. The manual also includes detailed appendices on PV system maintenance, troubleshooting, and insolation data for over 300 sites around the world. Used as the textbook in SEI's PV Design and Installation Workshop.

The Spanish version, Fotovoltaica: Manual de Diseño e Instalación, is available from SEI with discounts for educational institutions and NGO's.
Tax Credits Extended
SEI workshop
After a disastrous few weeks on Wall Street, the renewable energy industry has come out a winner. It seems there's always a silver lining in even the worst developments.

The long-awaited extension of the Production (PTC) and Investment Tax Credits (ITC) were finally passed as part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (H.R. 1424) and have now been signed into law by President Bush. The tax credit package, which is the same that passed the Senate on September 24, will extend the PTC for one year and the ITC for eight years. The extensions would be at least partially paid for by a change in the tax code for the oil and gas industry. The bill also contains removal of the US $2,000 cap for residential solar installations.

GYST's mission is to provide is to provide high school and college students the opportunity to bring sustainable energy systems, education, and assistance to people who are excluded from attaining a better life due to geographical location, economic inequality, and human rights violations. Through their volunteers, GYST has electrified schools and health clinics in Ghana and along the Thai/Burma border.
Compare the Candidates
SEI workshop
As the election draws nearer, many people want to know where the candidates stand on energy. Grist, an online resource for news about green issues and sustainable living, has a handy chart where you can see at a glance where the candidates stand on climate change and energy issues. Grist's chart not only compares Obama and McCain, but also shows the Green, Libertarian, and Independent candidate's stances as well.
