A Solar Victory in Colorado |
Colorado has just joined Canadians and four other states with legislation removing the restrictions on using clotheslines in restricted subdivisions. Many people in the United States are not allowed to hang out their clothes to dry in the sun. Community covenants, landlord prohibitions, and zoning laws are the three primary means of stopping people from using clotheslines. In the United States, six to ten percent of residential energy use goes toward running clothes dryers, and the average American uses more energy running a clothes dryer than the average African uses in a year for all her energy needs.
According to Senator Dick McCormack, a sponsor of "right to dry" legislation in Vermont, "People think it's silly, but what's silly is to worry so much about having to look at your neighbors' undies that you would prevent them from conserving energy. We're not making a big deal over clotheslines; we're making a big deal over global warming." Recently passed Colorado House Bill 1270 goes even further than restoring Coloradoans “right to dry” clothes outside. HB 1270 also removes homeowner covenants restricting use of wind turbines, shade structures, shutters, attic fans, evaporative coolers, and energy efficient outdoor lighting devices. Group of Eight Moves to Address Energy Security and Global Warming |
|
Last week the energy ministers from the Group of Eight industrialized countries (G8) and from China, India and South Korea met to discuss ways to enhance global energy security while simultaneously combating global climate change. The G8 includes Canada, Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The high-ranking officials agreed to establish the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC). In their joint statement, the ministers committed to "enhance vigorously" their efforts to address any supply disruption risks, to improve energy efficiency, to promote non-conventional oil and alternative energy resources and to diversify supply routes. They also noted that developing alternative transport and fuel technologies is essential to reduce the oil dependence of transportation throughout the world.

Alumni News from the Developing World - Bringing Light to Tanzania |
SEI alum Tony Cervone had a mission when he came to take workshops at SEI. He wanted to improve people's lives in rural Tanzania with solar energy. He has done exactly that with his company Green Energies LLC. Green Energies trains villagers to establish micro-factories where they build and sell their own Taa Boras (solar lights) and other solar services.
Their latest projects also involve students in the US. Students construct Taa Bora lights as a service-learning project. They learn about solar energy and the developing world, they get hands-on experience building the lights, and they connect with students in Tanzania, whose schools and lives could not be more different.
Green Energies now offers classroom kits and teacher's workshops to make it easy to get your students involved. Click here for a pdf with more information. |
