Upcoming SEI workshops - limited space still available!
SEI's summer workshops are filling up fast, but there's still some space available in a few upcoming workshops. If you want to learn how to get electricity out of running water, design and build natural and solar homes, implement renewable energy into your classroom, or implement renewable energy projects in the developing world, you have the opportunity this summer in Colorado. But hurry because spaces are going fast!
Indigenous Environmental Network
SEI workshop
SEI is working with the Western Shoshone Defense Project (WSDP) and the Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) to include renewable energy training at their upcoming conference “Protecting Mother Earth”.  This training will continue SEI’s ongoing “train the trainers” program, in which SEI works with Native American communities to develop their own local renewable energy programs.  Installation projects are a core component of these trainings.   In addition to providing clean renewable energy to local communities, these systems can also serve as training systems for future educational opportunities.

The conference and training will be held in July on Western Shoshone grounds where local communities have been fighting against nuclear testing and dumping for the past several decades.  SEI plans to install a 2 kW PV system to provide power for community buildings, but we need your help to complete the fundraising effort for this exciting project.  If you wish to donate to this project please call Jeff Tobe at SEI’s Paonia office at 970-527-7657 or email jeff@solarenergy.org.
Alumni Report from the Developing World - Help for Burma
SEI alum Arie Jongejan has been on the Thailand/Burma border the last couple of weeks teaching trainings about operating and maintaining solar systems.  He and his wife Angie spent a year doing similar work through SEI's INVEST program from 2006 - 2007.

Right now Burma is experiencing one of the worst natural disasters in modern history due to Cyclone Nargis, likely to result in deaths in the hundreds of thousands.  Arie recently sent SEI a petition to sign which will allow the UN and aid agencies to help the hundreds of thousands who will die in the next couple of weeks if left unattended to.  Cholera and typhoid will become an epidemic. If you would like to sign the petition please visit the US Campaign for Burma.

If you would like to do more, there are many groups working to get aid to the Burmese affected by the Cyclone. Here are just a few who are accepting donations:
A Bipartisan Effort to Extend the RE Tax Credits
35 members of the House of Representatives are leading a bipartisan effort to extend the renewable energy tax credits. The House sponsored H.R. 5984 is a companion to S. 2821, also known as the Clean Energy Tax Stimulus Act of 2008, sponsored by the Senate.

The Clean Energy Tax Stimulus Act of 2008 would provide for the limited continuation of clean energy production incentives and incentives to improve energy efficiency that would otherwise lapse under current tax law. Specifically, the bill would extend critical tax incentives including the production tax credit for electricity produced from renewable sources like wind, biomass, hydropower, and geothermal; and the 30 percent investment credit for businesses that install solar or fuel cell equipment.

Straw Bale Construction comes to Washington DC
SEI workshop
Joining a summer-long exhibition at the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington D.C., Builders Without Borders is creating a straw-bale eco-house to demonstrate energy-efficient design and green building techniques. The exhibit will be on display from Memorial Day through Columbus Day, Saturday May 24 - October 13, 2008.

The U.S. Botanic Garden is on the National Mall, across the street from the U.S. Capitol.

The USBG is producing this exhibition, called One Planet - Ours! to showcase earth-friendly techniques and technologies including edible school yards, urban orchards, a solar greenhouse, photovoltaic panels, a vertical wind turbine, green roofs and rainwater harvesting.

For more information on the exhibit visit the Builders without Borders website .
Solar Power 2008
SEI workshop
Solar Energy International will be at this year’s Solar Power Conference & Expo 2008, North America's Largest Solar Event, October 13 - 16 at the San Diego Convention Center.

Solar Power 2008 includes top vendors presenting the state-of-the-art in solar energy technologies and services; 60+ conference sessions and workshops; world-renowned CEO Panel plenary session; and extensive exhibits and
industry networking opportunities. The conference will encompass the full range of solar energy technologies, including photovoltaics, concentrating PV, concentrating solar power, solar hot water and space heating and cooling. Last year's event sold out in advance, so organizers encourage early registration. For more information visit:www.SolarPowerConference.com.

We are excited to see all of our alumni and friends at this historic event. Make sure to stop by and visit SEI at booth #1943.
