Sustainable Building Workshops |
SEI's 2008 Sustainable Building Program will kick off in June with a great lineup of workshops and guest instructors. The Sustainable Building Workshops are designed to give people a solid foundation in building design and material selection that will help them reduce their energy consumption and gain the most out of their renewable energy system. Whether you are building your own house, or simply want to be knowledgeable with those who will build it with you, these workshops will help you understand the critical home design principles and learn to make use of both new and centuries old methods and materials for sustainable living.

Report from the Developing World - Burma |
SunEnergy Power International (SEPI) is a non-profit organization which promotes an increased quality of life in
remote, rural regions of the world through the use of renewable energy. SEPI, founded by SEI alumni Mo Rousso and Walt Ratterman along with Doug Parsons, has a program to equip the mobile health clinics of the Karen people in Burma with small solar
systems.
Along with the Border Green Energy Team, Green Empowerment and Knightsbridge International, SEPI has provided trainings and equipment to 35 of the mobile health clinics in the Karen State.
In addition to the solar systems, Knightsbridge supports the supply of much needed medical supplies, equipment, and training to these areas. Their plan for 2008 is to provide training and solar systems for a medical
training facility in Burma that outfits over 40 mobile health teams, providing medical services to five ethnic groups
currently the target of ethnic cleansing in Burma. |

SEI Executive Director Johnny Weiss Wins Mark Fitzgerald Memorial Award |
Johnny Weiss was announced the winner of the 2008 ISP Mark C. Fitzgerald Memorial Award at a special ceremony as part of the "New Ideas in Education" Conference held New York on March 18th-20th.
"The renewable energy industry is fortunate to have a number of first-rate training centers -- and Johnny Weiss' Solar Energy International is a national leader," commented IREC's Jane Weissman, Chair of the Workforce Education Conference. "Johnny certainly deserves to be singled out as a true advocate and promoter of quality training."
The award was presented by Mr. Geoff Stapleton, Chairperson of the Institute for sustainable Power (ISP) Board of Directors.
The award is for an individual who is dedicated to promoting quality renewable energy training.
Mark Fitzgerald was a global champion of the development and application of professional standards to the training of renewable energy practitioners. In 1995, he launched the Institute for Sustainable Power (ISP). Mark passed away in June 2005, but ISP continues and grows. In Mark’s memory, a prize has been established by the World’s renewable energy community.

Solar Industry Seminar |
The solar and energy efficiency industries provide 8.5 million jobs in the US alone, and could grow to as many as 40 million jobs by 2030. Due to the large amounts of people looking for a career in the renewable energy industry, SEI holds an annual Solar Industry Seminar.
This past March SEI held our 2nd annual Solar Industry Seminar in Fort Collins, Colorado. The three day seminar had over 200 attendees, 25 solar electric and solar thermal exhibitors, and 28 technical trainings. This year's Seminar featured Bill Brooks, who presented on the 2008 National Electric Code as it applies to solar electric systems. In addition, there were numerous trainings that counted towards NABCEP continuing education credits. This year was also historic because we brought together 20 of SEI's PV instructors from around the country to help vision the future of SEI's PV Program.
Many thanks go out to all the attendees and exhibitors, and to our sponsors: Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association (CoSEIA), Renewable Energy World, Direct Power & Water, Outback Power Systems, Advanced Energy, Xantrex, and Odell Brewery.
This year's Solar Industry Seminar exemplified the growing support for a clean energy future, and one that honors the environment. Clearly, it is a very exciting time for renewable energy… and may the solar adventure continue!
